Black Spy is the foil to his nemesis, the White Spy, in the Spy vs Spy comic strip created by Antonio Prohías. Black Spy clashes with White Spy in every comic strip, and is successful in defeating him roughly half the time. Black Spy is distinguished from him by the black color of his trench-coat, pants, pointed-tip boots and very wide-brimmed hat with a white stripe, although both wear white long-sleeved undergarments. Both spies are physically identical, their most distinctive features being their long pointed noses, while they also have several curved strands of hair on their heads when their hats are removed. Earlier sketches of them portrayed them wearing black shades, which gradually morphed into their eyes themselves being black with white pupils from later writers.

Personality[]

Black Spy tends to be more comical in his schemes against White Spy. He has been shown as being susceptible to baits involving games, food and attractive women, the latter of which serves the Grey Spy to her advantage, who is always successful in defeating Black Spy and White Spy when they clash. Black Spy has also incorporated civilians into his schemes, although he does not cause them harm. Black Spy has also been shown as being empathetic towards other civilians, this sometimes exploited by White Spy. Particularly in comics by Peter Kuper, Black Spy occasionally uses disguises, and in comics by the same writer is portrayed as being envious as well as seeking of recognition and praise, often to his detriment.

Trivia[]

  • While fans like to call Black Spy "Joke" the game guide for the first Spy vs Spy game claims his name is "Jackel" It is unknown if this is considered canon. This is likely a reference to the vintage cartoon "Heckle and Jeckle" about a pair of magpies that highly resemble the Spies.
